BEIJING -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin has stressed continued efforts for the peaceful development of the relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a Taiwan-affairs conference held on Wednesday and Thursday.

Jia said he appreciated that over the past year cross-Strait relations had progressed in a stable way.

He also noted that Taiwanese could be counted on to improve the cross-Strait ties and called for concrete and effective measures to fortify and deepen the course of the peaceful development of the cross-Strait ties.

Over the past four years, the common political basis of the opposition of "Taiwan independence" and the recognition of the "1992 Consensus" has been established and strengthened with the joint efforts of the people on both the mainland and Taiwan, said a statement issued at the conference.

Cross-Strait ties have developed quickly recently with new agreements reached in the cross-Strait talks and negotiations, the opening of "three direct links" of cross-Strait mail, trade, air and shipping services, as well as the signing and implementation of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), the statement said.

The statement noted that there are increasingly more people in the island who participate in, support and benefit from the development of the cross-Strait relations.

The statement further called for efforts to solidify the framework that the two sides of the Strait belong to one China and to promote the political mutual trust between the two sides.

Moreover, the statement urged to advance the cross-Strait negotiations, deepen the cross-Strait economic cooperations, set conditions for the future resolving of political issues and promote the exchanges and communications between the two sides of the Strait.
