Guangdong province's investment from Taiwan-based firms during the first quarter of 2001 increased 51 percent over the same period last year.
By the end of 2000, more than 12,000 Taiwanese firms had established operations in Guangdong. Both contracted and realized Taiwanese investment in Guangdong accounted for a third of the nation's total, ranking the province the first nationwide, according to a story in the May 27 Jingji Ribao (Economic Daily).
According to statistics, among Taiwanese-funded firms that have entered the investment-return period in Guangdong, 90 percent were profit-making. Many large Taiwanese enterprises, such as Uni-President Enterprise Group and Formosa Plastics Group, have also shifted their focus to Guangdong and designated working teams to conduct market research.
Currently, there are more than 160 Taiwanese-funded companies in Guangdong, each with investment exceeding $10 million, the story said. (31 May 2001)
