Paper cutting is one of China's oldest and most honored traditional folk arts. To celebrate the Chinese New Year, Yulin city of Shanxi Province has been showcasing some of this time-honored art's highlights.
Across China, paper cuttings are expressions of happiness and well-wishes for the future. Each Chinese New Year in North Shanxi they hang from the windows and doors of nearly every household and are even given a special name, "window flowers."
Paper cutting themes ranging from animals to folklore are covered in a new exhibition. Some are hand torn figures that reflect modern aesthetics. One is 12 meters long and depicts life in Yulin 600 years ago. Over 1,000 pieces are on display.
Although many exhibits present Yulin's distinctive style, most are a combination of northern and southern styles. |
