China's modern history is a history of the country being invaded and carved up and the Chinese people being trampled upon. From 1840 through 1919 foreign invaders launched one war of aggression after another against China, forcing China to sign a series of unequal treaties.
Aggression by Japanese imperialists caused the most suffering and losses for the Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots. In 1895 Japan not only occupied Taiwan and Penghu Islands by force but also claimed "indemnities" to the tune of 230 million taels of silver. During its occupation of Taiwan, Japanese invaders killed 650,000 Taiwan compatriots and plundered countless amounts of properties. Japan's war of aggression against China resulted in 35 million Chinese casualties and Chinese economic losses of US$500 billion.
It is necessary to point out that some political forces in Japan are attempting to deny and cover up the acute suffering and huge economic losses inflicted on China by Japanese imperialists and revive Japanese militarism with the intention of once again grabbing Chinese territory Taiwan. This calls for great vigilance. |
