In recent years, the Taiwan authorities have impeded development of cross-Straits relations by refusing peaceful reunification and sticking to "two split entities with separate administrations." Separatist forces in the island have swelled very rapidly with the connivance of the Taiwan authorities. In June 1995, Lee Teng-hui went to the United States, openly creating "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan." In March 1996, the Taiwan authorities, availing themselves of the opportunity of a change in the way leaders for the Taiwan region are selected, attempted to change the fact that Taiwan is a part of China. During that period, separatist forces went rampant, clamoring for "Taiwan independence."
Certain foreign forces went further on the road of intervening on the Taiwan question. After permitting Lee Teng-hui to visit the United States in May 1995, the US government dispatched two aircraft carrier battle groups to the sea area near Taiwan in March 1996, a flagrant act of military intimidation against China and interference in China's internal affairs.
In order to consolidate progress that has been achieved in the development of cross-Straits relations in the past decade and more, contain separatist forces and "Taiwan independence" seekers and prevent foreign forces from intervening on the Taiwan question, the Chinese Government and people have since June 1995 undertaken persistent struggles in political, military and diplomatic fields against splittism, "Taiwan independence" and intervention by foreign forces. And they have achieved great successes.
The struggle of the Chinese Government and people against splittism and "Taiwan independence" has fully demonstrated their resolution and ability to safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has dealt a heavy blow on forces within Taiwan pursuing splittism and "Taiwan independence." The struggle has promoted China's peaceful reunification and contributed to peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific region. |
