How to understand "political differences should not affect or interfere with economic cooperation beteenthe two sides"? the legitimate rights and interests of businessmen from Taiwan"?

In his speech, Jiang Zemin called for vigorously developing economic exchanges and cooperation between the two sides, saying: "Political differences should not affect or interfere with economic cooperation between the two sides." This is a consistent stand of the Chinese government, which sets great store by developing cross-strait economic relations. It reflects the common wish and immediate interests of compatriots on both sides and has won their support and acclaim.

The basis of cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation is the mutual complementarity of the economies of the two sides. Such economic exchanges and cooperation are regulated by the market, and it is futile for anyone to restrict cross-strait economic cooperation under the pretext of political differences. The wise attitude is to follow the common wishes of people on both sides and meet economic opportunities and challenges of the 21st century by not affecting and interfering with cross-strait economic cooperation with political differences. Recent years have seen an impressive development in cross-strait economic relations, a rapid increase in Taiwan compatriots' investment in the mainland and annual record setting in indirect trade volume between the two sides. It can be expected that, with continued development of cross-strait economic and trade relations and increased exchanges of visits, Chinese compatriots on both sides will reach a greater consensus on issues and have greater mutual trust.

At present, the Chinese nation is once again faced with development opportunities and competitive challenges. Chinese compatriots on both sides should, by giving full play to their respective advantages, further develop and expand their economic exchanges and cooperation for joint prosperity and arevitalization of the entire Chinese nation.
