Jiang Zemin said: Chinese culture "has become ties keeping the entire Chinese people close at heart and constitutes an important basis for a peaceful reunification of the motherland." Culture is the sum total of the lifestyle of a country or nation. A particular culture is characteristic of a particular nation having that culture. With a long history, Chinese culture is rich and profound. It is a strong force binding the Chinese people. Although, in the long history of China, the Chinese nation repeatedly suffered humiliations and calamities, Chinese culture has never stopped developing. Passed down from generation to generation, it has always nurtures unity of the nation and unification of the country.
Taiwan culture is a part of Chinese culture. It has its roots in the mainland. The Chinese compatriots on both sides have the same ancestors and use the same language. Chinese culture is rooted in the spiritual and material life of Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. In the modern history of Taiwan, Taiwan culture received strong influences from Western culture, but compatriots in Taiwan have always kept their dignity as Chinese and Chinese cultural characteristics.
Jiang Zemin said: "People on both sides of the Taiwan Straits should inherit and carry forward the fine traditions of Chinese culture." Cross-strait cultural exchanges can spread, promote and develop Chinese culture. They can also deepen national feelings and love between compatriots on the two sides. The mainland has actively promoted cross-Straits cultural exchanges in various forms and through various channels under the principle of "bi-directional exchanges, treating each other with sincerity, mutual consultations and joint promotion of pros-perity. "In recent years, a number of quality cultural and art items such as operas, paintings, calligraphic works, music, dances, cultural relics and acrobatics have been performed or exhibited in Taiwan to warm acclaim from Taiwan compatriots. They aroused one wave after another of popular fervor for Chinese culture there. The mainland has rich folk culture, countless numbers of cultural treasures and numerous cultural and art troupes. For mainland cultural circles, their Taiwan counterparts are always welcome to visit the mainland for mutual comparing of notes. Chinese culture will keep thriving along with active cross-Straits cultural exchanges. |
