AN unconventional wedding was held at a U Station, a volunteer service station, near the eastern gate of Longgang Sports Center on Wednesday,Aug 17.
Luo Haosheng and his bride Chen Xiaoling, both in sunflower clothes — the uniform for volunteers — were greeted by 70 volunteers when the ceremony started at 8 a.m.
Jiang Zunyu, Longgang Party chief, and Jiang Jianjun, head of the Longgang District government, presented a golden statue of the Longgang Sports Center as a gift to the newlyweds.
“This would be the most memorable wedding ceremony, and I feel very happy,” said the bride.
Luo, 27 and Chen, 25, are colleagues in a company in Longgang District. They both signed up to be volunteers in May, 2011.
“Even though our families had planned a wedding this month (August), we did not want to miss the chance of being volunteers,” Luo said.
According to tradition, Luo should have gone to the bride’s home and escort her back in the early morning. But they finally decided to attend the morning meeting and remain at their posts before attending a reception at a hotel in Futian.
The newlyweds did not plan a honeymoon because they considered voluntary service was their honeymoon.
