GUANGZHOU, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The total investment in the Guangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games will reach about 122.6 billion yuan (18.37 billion U.S. dollars), Wan Qingliang, mayor of south China's Guangzhou City said on Wednesday.
Infrastructure building including the construction of Guangzhou's metro system, roads, environmental protection and water treatment projects in preparation for the games accounted for 109 billion yuan (16.33 billion U.S. dollars) of the investment, Wan said.
About 6.3 billion yuan (944 million U.S. dollars) is expected to be spent on the games' 70 venues, of which 12 are newly built and 58 are modified or expanded from existing ones. Another 7.3 billion yuan (1.09 billion U.S. dollars) will be spent on the games' operation, he said.
The Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov. 12. During the 15-day games, a total of 10,156 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will compete in 476 events over 42 sports.
The Asian Para Games will start on Dec. 12.
