Carlsberg forms JV in Gansu

Carlsberg A/S, the world's fifth largest brewer, will form a 280 million-yuan (US$33.73 million) brewing joint venture with Lanzhou Huanghe Group to expand its presence in China's northwest region, said the Chinese partner on March 26 in a statement.
Carlsberg will spend 140 million yuan (US$16.91 million) in cash in the new venture while the Shenzhen-listed Lanzhou Huanghe Group will use land and other operating assets worth a total of 140 million yuan as the investment in the venture, which will be based in the northwest province of Gansu.
The two sides hold an equal 50 percent of the stakes in the joint brewery, which will have an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of beer.
"Judging from Carlsberg's move, the company may shift its business from East China to the inner reaches where the competition on high-end beer products is far less fierce," said Wu Jianhua, secretary-general with the Shanghai Brewing Association. "It is very likely that the new venture will produce Carlsberg beer and some local branded beer at the same time."
Last year, around 2,000 tons of Carlsberg beer were sold in Shanghai while Budweiser, the most popular beer in East China, has a consumption volume of up to 40,000 tons.
