BEIJING -- A senior Chinese mainland official responsible for Taiwan affairs said Thursday that members of Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) should visit the mainland under an "appropriate condition and identity."

Wang Yi, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks in response to a question at a legal forum on cross-Strait development in Beijing.

Wang emphasized that the mainland hopes the DPP will adjust its policies concerning the mainland and cease its pursuit of "Taiwanese independence."

"We would like to welcome DPP members to the mainland to witness its true development, as long as the DPP changes its stance and becomes a constructive force for the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties," Wang added.
