Vice-premier Qian: One-China Policy Critical

The Taiwan issue is at the core of Sino-US relations, with China hoping the US will keep its one-China policy, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said Friday.
He said such a US position is crucial to future Sino-US relations.
Qian said so while meeting US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Talbott said the US knows the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, and hopes that the US would keep its promises on the one-China policy made during the Nixon administration.
Talbott told Qian that the US Government opposes the "Taiwan security enhancement act," and will prevent the proposal from becoming law.
Qian said that maintaining good relations between US and China will benefit both parties.
"It will benefit world peace and regional stability as well," Qian said.
Last year, the relationship between China and US had experienced some twists and turns.
Thanks to the joint efforts by the leaders of the two countries, especially after the Auckland summit between President Jiang Zemin and US President Bill Clinton, China-US relations have gradually moved back on track, Qian said.
He said although there were still differences and challenges ahead, China is willing to co-operate with the US to develop bilateral relations.
Talbott said that the Clinton administration has been working hard to develop these relations with China and President Clinton had decided to promote friendly relations between the two countries during the remainder of his term in office.
Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, also met with Talbott and spelled out China's stands on Taiwan and the weapon sales issue.
