TENGCHONG, Yunnan -- A senior Chinese mainland official has called upon people from both the mainland and Taiwan to deepen the recognition of the one-China principle and solidify political mutual trust in a bid to advance cross-Strait peaceful relations.
"The two sides' mutual trust and communications, based on the common political basis of the opposition of 'Taiwan independence' and the recognition of the 1992 Consensus, are crucial to the stable development of cross-Strait relations," said Wang Yi, director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a symposium held Thursday in southwestern Yunnan province.
During the meeting, Wang said the mainland is eying more measures to improve cross-Strait communications.
"Along with the island, we're willing to consider further simplifying procedures for traveling across the Strait in a bid to boost the emotional ties between people from both sides as an entire family," Wang explained.
The official also promised more efforts to encourage mainland residents to travel to Taiwan and allow more cities to send their residents to the island on individual trips.
In June 2011, the mainland and Taiwan launched a pilot travel program which allows mainland tourists to visit the island as individuals.
According to Wang, the mainland will also adopt measures to promote communications among young people across the Strait and create a favorable environment for Taiwan students to study in the mainland.
In addition, Wang called for the unification of "as many Taiwan compatriots from all walks of life as possible" to consolidate mainstream public opinion in favor of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. |
