Mainland says Taiwan "referendum" is doomed to failure

The Chinese Mainland has said that the so-called "peace referendum" held by Taiwan authorities goes against the will of the people and is doomed to failure.
A statement jointly released on Saturday by the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, called the referendum "invalid" because less than half of the island's eligible voters took part.
The statement says the referendum is a provocative attempt to undermine cross-Straits relations and split China. The voting for the election of Taiwan authorities' leaders was also carried out across the island on Saturday. Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu, candidates for the Democratic Progressive Party won 50.11 percent of the total votes. Lien Chan and James Soong of the coalition of the Kuomintang and People First Party, won 49.89 percent of the votes. Lien and Soong claimed the election was unfair and said they would file a lawsuit to nullify the election. The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said the mainland is watching the developments closely.
